How to Make Swiss Chard Chips

Swiss chard is a staple in the garden. It’s a cold season crop that grows well in both the spring and fall garden, and it doesn’t bolt in the summer heat thanks to its succulent-like stems. When cared for properly, Swiss chard can grow from early spring straight through fall, producing for months.

Swiss chard works great in stir fries, poutine and also as chips! You can buy Swiss chard seeds in a variety of colours, which look beautiful in the garden, but we find the white variety always performs best for us.

If you’ve never grown Swiss chard before and have just purchased leaves from the grocery store, I highly recommend trying it in your garden. It’s super simple to start from seed, grows quickly and is a reliable garden vegetable.

Ingredients for Swiss Chard Chips

  • 2-3 large swiss chard leaves (amount needed depends on the size of the leaves and the pan)
  • Olive oil
  • Salt

How to Make Swiss Chard Chips

Step 1

Pick a few leaves off the plant. Harvesting Swiss chard is easy, just break off the stem near the base of the plant. Wash them and pat them dry, or dry them in a salad spinner. If the leaves are not dry they may not cook properly.

Step 2

Preheat oven to 375°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone mat.

Step 3

Cut the stem off and cut or tear the leaves in to chip size pieces.

Step 4

Lay the swiss chard leaves in a single layer on the baking sheet. Sprinkle salt and olive oil on all of the leaves, ensuring they are all lightly coated.

Step 5

Once the oven has preheated, put the swiss chard in the oven for 15 minutes or until the leaves are crispy. Be careful to not let them burn.

Step 6

Remove from the oven and enjoy! The chips taste best right out of the oven and do not keep (they will soften again and lose their crunch).

That’s it!

A super quick and easy garden snack that is both tasty and nutritious. These chips are just another great reason to grow swiss chard!
