We all have our favourite seed companies that we love to buy from. Maybe because they offer a wide selection, maybe they’re local or maybe you just like the packaging! And while these seed companies offer a selection of organic seeds, most of the seeds are actually grown with conventional standards.
But as the climate crisis continues to worsen, we as gardeners need to start buying with sustainability in mind. One of the last places gardeners often look to become more sustainable is with the seeds that they buy. Because most seed companies don’t offer many varieties that are organic, we often choose to go for the variety we want, regardless of if it’s organic or untreated.
Which is why I wanted to write this article; to celebrate seed companies that sell 100% of their seeds organically or untreated, because what they’re doing is very important for the environment. From certified organic to untreated, and even permaculture practices, the below list of seed companies are doing either some, or all of these growing practices. These seeds are most often open-pollinated, and always non-GMO. All of these seed farms are offering seeds that allow you to grow in a way that works with the environment and with the important pollinators that come with growing a garden.
The list below is organized by province, with all farms residing in Canada. Some of these farms offer shipping to the US, while other’s don’t. All of these seeds should be well suited to our Canadian growing season, but if you want to support local growers near you, or want to guarantee the seeds will do well in your growing environment, you’ll definitely want to check out the seed suppliers closest to you!

By choosing to buy from one or many of these farms below, you are choosing to be a steward to nature, while also choosing to buy from local (and often) small businesses. It’s important to support our local, small businesses to ensure that we have choice in varieties and support community. Happy seed shopping!
