Vego Garden vs Sproutbox Garden Raised Bed – Which is Better?

sproutbox garden or vego garden. is one better than the other? which one is best

Over the last few years I’ve been working to trial different metal raised beds on your behalf to determine if one is better than the other, so today I wanted to do a review of the Vego Garden vs Sproutbox Garden since they are two of the larger companies available here in Canada. I was gifted both the Vego Garden and the Sproutbox Garden as part of their ambassador program, and now that I have a raised bed from both companies I thought it was the perfect time to compare the two companies.

I got my Sproutbox Garden in 2023 and chose the 32″ high 9-in-1 garden in the Pampas White. I thought it would be interesting to try out a garden that is 32″ high since I’ve never gardened at this height before and wanted to test it out for accessibility purposes. This way I can suggest it to those that may struggle to kneel, bend or garden at a lower height. The garden is called a 9-in-1 because it can be built in 9 different configurations and I chose the 5’x5′ shape. At the time of this writing (2025), we are now on our 3rd year with the garden and this year we plan to take it apart and rebuild it. I’m not sure if I want to take it apart BEFORE I plant my summer garden in it (as it’s currently filled with cabbage) or wait until fall. The reason we want to rebuild the garden is because the 5’x5′ configuration is really difficult to reach the centre of the garden. When we do rebuild the garden I am going to try the 6.5′ x 3.5′ garden configuration since it holds an equivalent amount of soil so we won’t have extra soil leftover, and I’ll easily be able to reach all sides of the garden. I have a more in depth review you can check out here, along with a 2 year update on the garden.

Alright, let’s talk about our Vego Garden. I just received the garden this year making it my first garden season with it. I chose the 17″ high garden to see how I enjoy it compared to the taller gardens. They have some really cool style options but I did go with the Classic garden so the panels look exactly the same as my Sproutbox Garden, but this one I got in Olive Green. I got the Standard U-Shape garden but I added 3 extension kits to it to make it longer and wider. I did have to go to Home Depot to get some hardware since the garden isn’t meant to be customized, but it was a simple $1 upgrade in hardware for us. Based on the customization that we made, I think it would be cool if Vego Garden did offer their Jumbo U-Shape garden like a 3-in-1 style or something similar where you can take the additional panels and lengthen the garden either along the back or sides, or even widen the two sides. But it was simple for us to do ourselves!

About the Companies

Sproutbox Garden is a Canadian owned company based out of British Columbia. They were one of the first companies to hit the Canadian garden scene with metal raised beds (from what I’ve seen). They sell metal raised beds made out of Magnesium Aluzinc which are meant to last up to 20 years before needing to be replaced. When it does come time to retire the garden, both the gardens and the hardware can all be recycled.

Vego Garden is a US based company operating out of Texas. They started in 2020 and have become one of the biggest names in metal raised beds in the US, and expanded into Canada in 2024. They offer 4 different styles of metal raised beds, where some are made from Magnesium Aluzinc, while others are made out of galvanized steel – depending on the style of garden. Like Sproutbox, their gardens are meant to last up to 20 years and can be completely recycled at the end of their lifecycle.

The Main Difference?

Sproutbox Garden is Canadian owned, while Vego Garden is US owned. Vego Garden has a wider selection of products & colour choices, but Sproutbox Garden has all of the staple sizes and shapes (with some unique options)

When I first started following Sproutbox Garden they only had a minimal selection of gardens. However, over the past couple of years they’ve been adding new gardens – some I hadn’t even seen until writing this article. Some of their cool gardens include their Nest and the Crescent garden – and they’ve also added in the U-shape garden since I joined as an Ambassador. If you can’t tell by now, I love any garden that feels immersive – I love being surrounded by my plants. One thing that remains the same is the pattern of the gardens and the colour selection. They only offer one panel style, 3 heights and 3 colours to choose from. They also offer a few accessories as well, including solar lights, a trellis system, Hori Hori knives and harvest bags that can compliment your garden. Based on their history, I would imagine they will continue to add new products as the years continue.

Product selection, in my opinion, is where Vego Garden shines. They have a massive selection of gardens to choose from including 4 different panel types, 4 heights and up to 8 colours! Whenever I go on their website I feel like I’m in heaven with the selection I can choose from. They also have quite a selection of accessories, from trellises to irrigation systems to these neat netting cover systems. I love that there are 4 different panel types to choose from that suits your home and garden aesthetic. They have classic looks, modern looks and even a woodgrain look. The only disappointing thing is that the selection of shapes, heights and sizes is limited in their Novel, Modern and Woodgrain line. The largest selection exists in the Classic line only (pictured above).

One product that Vego offers that I was really considering getting is the elevated garden. This garden is so perfect for balcony, deck and townhome growers, or those with accessibility concerns. I think this is a great product to be offering. Finally, they offer bundles where you can get multiple gardens at a reduced price. I like this for anyone who is looking to get matching gardens in their yard for a certain aesthetic.

The Main Difference?

Vego Garden has a wider selection of products to choose from – mainly in the panel shape, colour choices and accessories. If you’re looking for a super customized garden in fun colours, then Vego excels in this area. Sproutbox Garden does offer certain products though that are unique and not available elsewhere such as the Nest and Crescent garden, as well as the U-shape garden in the 32″ height.

The Garden Materials

A close up of the Sproutbox Garden

Sproutbox Garden

Sproutbox Gardens are made of Magesium Aluzinc which is a type of steel garden that is meant to last 20 years and can be fully recycled. The panels are 0.6mm thick. Because the garden comes with colouring on the panels, they are covered in a plastic film to protect them when they are shipped.

Vego Garden

Most of Vego Gardens are made of Magesium Aluzinc which is a type of steel garden that is meant to last 20 years and can be fully recycled. The panels are 0.6mm thick. The Modern series is made from a powder coated commercial grade galvanized steel.

According to their website “We have combined this metal with our award-winning AkzoNobel paint to develop a new material which we call VZ 2.0” and this is what is used on the outside of the gardens for the colouring. Because the garden comes with colouring on the panels, they are covered in a plastic film to protect them when they are shipped.

The Main Difference?

From both of their website descriptions, I don’t know if there is any difference in the gardens in terms of material or thickness. Maybe the paint colour is a different material so I’m looking forward to seeing how the Vego Garden holds up over the next season or two compared to the Sproutbox. The only difference is that Vego Garden has a Modern series that uses galvanized steel.

Shipping and Packaging

Sproutbox Garden

Since it’s been 2 years since I received my Sproutbox Garden I can’t remember too much detail about how long the shipping took, but I did receive it in January so it was fulfilled quickly and I wasn’t in a rush to get it built. When it did arrive, the garden came in a surprisingly small, but heavy box. I would say, if you have trouble lifting heavy items you’ll need help moving the box into your home, or into your back garden. The box and garden were in good condition on arrival and I had no issues with it.

Vego Garden

My Vego Garden order came in 4 different shipments: 1 the garden, 2 extension kits, and 1 solar lights and they shipped at 4 different times and arrived at 4 different times. The main issue with this is that I needed the extension kits in order to build the garden so if one box is delayed, it delays the entire build. I ordered my garden in the first week of April which is still early for Canada, but is likely much busier in the US since their season is longer. I received the garden 8 days after ordering it (it crossed 5 US states and the Canada-US border) which is good considering it started in Texas. However it took 13 days for my extension kits to arrive which means I had to wait 5 more days before building my garden. Since it was early spring this wasn’t an issue for me, but if I was ordering last minute, those 5 days would have felt like an eternity, especially for a small shipment like an extension kit. When the garden arrived, it came in a very tattered up box with hardware everywhere. I go into more detail about this in my Vego Garden review so you can check it out there. Vego was quick to reply back to my email about the issue and sent me a new garden within a day or two of our interaction. The second garden arrived in under a week of resending it – but when it was all said and done it was almost an entire month from ordering to receiving the product.

The Main Difference

My garden was shipped faster from Sproutbox because it came in January and was shipped in Canada. My Vego Garden took quite a bit more time since it had to pass through 5 US states, and through the Canada-US Border. By the time the garden did get to me, the box had seen better days. The second garden came in better shape, but the box still showed signs of distress.

Building the Gardens

Sproutbox Garden

The Sproutbox Garden was actually quite easy to build. The part I hated the most was pulling all of the plastic film off of each of the panels. The plastic film was really stuck on and often would rip into tiny pieces, so it was very time consuming. It took me almost 45 minutes since it wouldn’t come off in one giant pull. They’re so easy to build that one person can easily do it alone. Apart from the plastic film, my biggest complaint is that there are two different lengths of tension rods and they weren’t labelled so I installed them wrong. My garden is now caving in on the sides and it’s because of this – and I don’t know if I still have the tension rods that I originally didn’t install in order to fix the problem. Plus I have to go through the work of emptying my garden now to fix it. Had they been labelled this wouldn’t have been an issue. I’m not sure if the tension rods come labelled since getting mine in 2023. The only other issue is the rubber edging was also not long enough to go around the edge of my garden. However, after emailing Sproutbox they were quick to mail me a new one. The good news is that the rubber edging didn’t stop me from being able to build and fill the garden.

Vego Garden

Everything about the Vego Garden build is similar to the Sproutbox Garden build. All of the panels have plastic film on them that need to be pulled off (both the inside and outside of the panel) but I found the plastic film to come off of the Vego way easier. The one difference I found though is that the Vego panels are sharp. I got cut twice while removing the plastic, so I highly recommend wearing gloves and a long sleeve shirt and pants to protect your skin. The garden was super simple to build and again can be done with just one person. It did take two of us to build our garden, only because we extended the garden to 14 feet so it was wobbly.

The Main Difference?

Both gardens are super easy to build and can be done with just one person. The biggest difference with the 17″ garden is that Vego uses 6 bolts per panel, vs Sproutbox uses 4 bolts.

Is there a price difference?

Since both Vego Garden and Sproutbox offer a wide range of gardens, and don’t offer exactly the same across their companies, I’m going to pick two gardens that they both offer and compare their prices. I’m going to list their regular price (although they both run sales often) and in Canadian dollars. These prices will be at the time of writing, May 2025.

17″ Tall Modular 9-in-1 Raised Bed

Sproutbox Garden: $279.95 CAD regular price

Vego Garden: $329.95 CAD regular price

At the time of this writing though, the Sproutbox was $40 off making it $239.95 CAD, while Vego was 29% off making it $232.95 CAD, so always check for sales because during a sale their prices are almost identical.

32″ Tall Large Round Garden

Sproutbox Garden: $284.95 CAD

Vego Garden: $274.95 CAD

At the time of this writing, Sproutbox is offering the garden for $32 off making it $252.95CAD, while Vego Garden was 15% off making it $232.95 CAD.

Shipping

Sproutbox offers free shipping on all orders over $499 CAD in Canada. Shipping costs for orders under $499 ranged from $24-38 CAD (or $1 if they’re running a sale) in Canada. If you live in the US and order from Sproutbox your garden would be subject to tariffs (at the time of this writing) on top of shipping costs. Shipping costs will range depending on location, and what you ordered.

Vego Garden charges $25 in shipping PER garden bed to Canada, so the more you order (regardless of price or quantity), the more the shipping costs will go up. This applies to the bundled gardens as well (a 4 pack will cost $100 CAD in shipping). If you live in the US shipping is free on orders over $99 USD of their raised garden beds.

The Takeaway

When running a sale, both websites are really similar in price, the main price difference exists when the gardens are not on sale, as well as the shipping costs. As a Canadian, if your main concern is cost, and cost only, check both websites to see if they are similar in price and recognize that each garden at Vego Garden will actually be $25 more, to cover shipping. Using the 32″ Round garden above, Vego is $20 cheaper (when on sale) than Sproutbox, but after shipping will be $5 more than a Sproutbox and will be shipped from the US. So this is something to consider.

At this time, US gardeners should stick with Vego Garden since it will likely be far more expensive to ship a Sproutbox Garden to the US when you include tariffs and shipping brokerage fees.

If colour, design and style are more important to you, I recommend looking at both websites for what you want. On the surface their products look almost identical, but actually they’re quite different. For example, Sproutbox offers completely different shapes in the 32″ height when compared to Vego Garden, while they both offer unique products that the other doesn’t (ie the Nest at Sproutbox or the Cascade at Vego). Therefore, looking at both websites means you’re far more likely to find the exact garden you’re looking for AND also able to compare prices if they offer the same item.

Overall experience using the Sproutbox Garden

Since receiving my Sproutbox Garden I have only had the few minor issues when building it, along with the caving sides from the tension rod (that I have chosen to not to fix at the moment.) Otherwise, entering into my 3rd year with the garden, I only have one minor scuff on one panel. Apart from those two issues, the garden looks exactly the same as the day I got it.

Overall experience using the Vego Garden

I just finished my first season with my Vego Garden and it held up nicely to the weather so far. At this point it looks and feels exactly the same as my Sproutbox Garden so I expect for it to hold up the same. What I love the most about my Vego is its SIZE! It’s incredible and it was an exceptionally productive garden this season. I had no issues with the panels bowing or scratching and overall really enjoyed growing in it. I love the U-shape that I chose and am really pleased I have it.

So is one better than the other?

I think there are a few main takeaways to consider.

Materials

In terms of the garden materials, building it and overall longevity, I would say both gardens are exactly the same.

Price

When the gardens are on regular price there is a price difference between the gardens, with both companies taking turns being the more expensive choice for a comparable garden. But they both run sales regularly. I recommend waiting for a sale and buying your garden then. If they’re both running a sale at the same time then the prices are almost identical, the main difference is if you’re in Canada you’ll have to pay shipping with Vego.

Where they Operate

Sproutbox is a Canadian company, while Vego Garden is a US company so depending on where you live might influence your decision on this.

Selection

If you want a basic square or rectangular garden, either company will give you what you’re looking for. But if you want a very specific shape, colour or panel pattern then you’ll want to check out both websites. Vego Garden has way more panel and colour choices, but Sproutbox has a few unique shapes that Vego doesn’t offer.

And one final note, Sproutbox Garden and Vego Garden are not the only options available on the market! If you want to review out more options, you’ll definitely want to check out this article on the best metal raised beds.
